Actor, Writer, Director

"Richard's deep understanding of the craft, combined with his patient and insightful teaching style, has helped me unlock new levels of confidence and skill.

His feedback is always constructive, honest, and delivered with kindness. I've grown immensely as an actor under his guidance."

  • What is Richard's background in acting and coaching?
I have over two decades of experience in the entertainment industry, spanning acting, directing, and coaching. I trained at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and later earned an MA in Actor Training and Coaching from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. My work has taken me throughout the UK to international tours, and I've been privileged to work with some of the UK's top drama schools and conservatoires as well as household names and industry leaders.
  • What makes Richard's coaching unique?
My coaching is underpinned by my "Find Your Playful" philosophy and incorporates my unique Method of Directional Transformation. I blend techniques from Stanislavsky, Michael Chekhov, and The Nine Viewpoints to create a holistic, psychophysical approach that encourages actors to take creative risks and develop their unique artistic voice. What will always be key, however, is that you, the client, are always treated with respect, your artistic voice valued and your needs and goals prioritised above anything else.
  • What is the "Find Your Playful" philosophy?
"Find Your Playful" is at the heart of my coaching approach. It's about balancing rigorous technique with the freedom to explore and even fail - because that's where the magic often happens. This philosophy encourages actors to tap into their creativity, take risks, and approach their craft with a sense of joy and discovery.
  • How does Richard's approach differ from traditional acting methods?
While I draw from traditional methods, my approach is more holistic and adaptive. I view each actor as a unique artist and tailor my coaching to their individual needs and goals. My Method of Directional Transformation, in particular, offers a dynamic way of approaching character development that goes beyond conventional character analysis.
  • What types of coaching services does Richard offer?
I offer a range of services including one-to-one coaching (in-person and online), on-set coaching, dialogue preparation and script breakdown services, drama school audition preparation, workshops and masterclasses, and specialised services like self-tape consultation, audition preparation, skill development and career transition coaching. Besides my work as an acting coach, I take many of the working practices and apply them to the corporate world, helping business and industry leaders refine their communication, leadership and presentation skills.
  • Does Richard work with beginners or only experienced actors?
Whilst the majority of my work involves 'jobbing actors', I work with performers at all stages of their careers, from beginners to seasoned professionals. My approach is tailored to meet each individual's needs and goals.
  • Can Richard help with specific projects or auditions?
Absolutely. Whether you're preparing for an audition, developing a character for a specific role, or working on a long-term project, I can provide targeted coaching to help you achieve your goals.
  • How much do coaching sessions cost?
Pricing varies depending on the type of service and duration. All prices are transparently displayed on the services page. Please contact me for a personalised quote based on your specific needs if you need something that is not covered by the products and services available. If you want to discuss your needs more thoroughly, I would advise booking in for an online consultation. They are free of charge, and there is no obligation to book following the session, but it gives you the opportunity to ask more specific questions.
  • Do you offer package deals or discounts for multiple sessions?
Yes, I offer package deals for multiple sessions, which can be more cost-effective for long-term coaching. I also occasionally run special promotions. Be sure to sign up to the mailing list or join the site to be the first to hear about any savings. I also offer a 10% discount for members of Equity. Be sure to ask for the discount code at your consultation prior to booking!
  • What is your cancellation policy?
I understand that schedules can change and I will always accommodate you where possible. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please give at least 48 hours notice. Late cancellations or no-shows may be subject to the full session cost. I use third party studios who all have their own cancellation policies. So, if you have booked in for a studio-based session, you may still be liable for the studio fee even if a reimbursement is agreed upon from my end. Cancellations are subject to a cancellation fee. I make no money on these; it is simply the handling fee that is passed on.
  • How does online coaching work?
Online coaching sessions are conducted via a secure video platform. We'll work on everything from monologue preparation to script analysis, leveraging technology to review recordings and provide detailed feedback. It's designed to be just as effective as in-person coaching. By default, I use Zoom, but am happy to use alternative platforms on a case by case basis if that is preferable. You will receive a personalised Zoom meeting link in your confirmation email once the session has been booked.
  • What equipment do I need for online coaching?
You'll need a reliable internet connection, a device with a camera (computer, tablet, or smartphone), and a quiet space to work. I'll provide guidance on how to set up your space for optimal coaching if required.
  • Is online coaching as effective as in-person coaching?
While the format is different, online coaching can be just as effective as in-person sessions. Many actors find the comfort of their own space allows them to take even bigger risks and make bolder choices. I would encourage less experienced clients and drama school applicants, however, to undertake coaching in person or through combination packages.
  • Can you help me prepare for drama school auditions?
Absolutely. I offer specialised coaching for drama school auditions, including monologue selection and preparation, interview technique, and school-specific guidance. Many of my clients have successfully gained places at top UK drama schools. I have worked - and continue to work - at many of the leading conservatoires, and have extensive experience working as a panelist at multiple institutions.
  • Which drama schools have your students been accepted to?
My students have been accepted to many prestigious institutions including RADA, LAMDA, The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Bristol Old Vic, and many others.
  • What is the Method of Directional Transformation?
The Method of Directional Transformation is a unique technique I've developed that views characters as dynamic, ever-evolving entities. It integrates physical exploration, archetypal theory, and cognitive science to help actors create nuanced, truthful performances.
  • How is the Method of Directional Transformation different from other acting methods?
Unlike methods that focus on fixed character traits, the Method of Directional Transformation emphasises the character's journey and evolution. It provides actors with tools to explore the full range of a character's transformative arc, resulting in more dynamic and authentic performances. It is informed heavily by our current understandings of psychology, sociology, and somatic practice. It prioritises the imagination as one of the actor's major tools in relation to the body.
